Kentucky representative Tim Couch wants to put through a bill that would make it illegal for anyone to make anonymous posts on the Internet. Couch’s bill would require sites to collect the names and addresses of all those who participate online, and each person’s real name would be attached to their postings.
Anonymous speech is an important aspect of the First Amendment that has historically been upheld by the Supreme Court. Predictably, Couch’s reasoning is that his bill is for the sake of the children.
Comments can be sent to Representative Couch through his mail form on the Kentucky Legislature web site.
